GATU (Girl At The Unicorn) – LBQ Night in Brixton

We caught up with the ladies behind GATU (Girls At The Unicorn) to hear more about their hotly anticipated new venue for their LBQ night, at the Market House in Brixton – South London. The new venue launch night will be on Sunday 30th April 2017 (that’s over the bank holiday weekend people, so no need to worry about being hungover at work – phew). Check out our question and answer session below with the GATU team for more details -make sure to read more about their up and coming event on our event calendar >

GATU Launch Party BrixtonWhoruns the night?

It’s just the two of us – Marleen and Jay

When did it start?

October 2016

Why did you start it?

Both of us live in South London and we found there wasn’t many female centred gay nights south of the river hence we took it upon ourselves to create one.

We started off in Peckham at John at the Unicorn and have now decided to move it to Brixton as it is better connected to the underground.

What’s the vibe of the night and who is it aimed at?

It’s aimed at LBQ females. We bring a popping hip hop and House vibe to London’s South. Pour out a gin and tonic and get low to Missy, Queen Bee mixed with House floor-fillers.

What can people expect from the night?

A buzzing atmosphere where everyone can be who they are, dance as they like, kiss who they want to and let the inner unicorn out.

What makes it different from other lesbian event nights?

It is important for us that our night creates a safe atmosphere and place for LBQ females but at the same time we dont want to exclude people. Gay and male friends are also welcome as we don’t want to turn people away because of their sexual identity. We feel that at times the LGBT scene can be quite exclusive and we want to make sure that a LGBT woman can still come to our party if she only has male gay or other straight friends.

How often does it take place and where?

We have finally found our new home at Market House in Brixton where we will do our regular GATU nights from now on every other month. For June we have got something special planned at XOYO where we will host an afterparty which is aimed to all LGBT Londoners. We therefore renamed our night to Gays at the Unicorn.

Generally its best to follow our social platforms (@girlsattheunicorn) to keep updated on dates and news and to get on the guest list.

What’s the type of music?

Hip Hop and House – general crowd pleasers. We are always up to listen to song suggestions from the crowd.

Thanks for the low down ladies – we’re looking forward to hitting Brixton for what promises to be a great night! Keep up to date with all Lesbian events in London, including GATU, by signing up to Nonchalant London emails. GATU LBQ Party
