Periods suck. Anyone who has a period knows this. They can be uncomfortable, painful, inconvenient, and a pain to deal with. Whether your problem is cramps, a heavy flow, bloating, pain, or hormones, your period can really affect your emotional health. Here are some hacks to make your period suck less.
If your periods are more than annoying and are having a negative impact on your life, whether for pain or hormone reasons, speak to your doctor. There are methods that can be used to make periods more manageable, such as birth control like the contraceptive injection (but make sure you seek medical advice before using birth control). If your periods are just annoying you though, then there are some things you can do to help.
Here’s some tips from us to make that time of the month a little less upsetting.
1. Spare Underwear
Keep spare underwear in your bag or in your desk. Leaking into your underwear is frustrating, but can’t always be avoided. Perhaps you started your period and didn’t realize, or had a particularly heavy flow day. Be prepared and keep spare underwear around when you’re due on, so you can change and not be stuck in uncomfortable, wet underwear all day.
Maybe just keep some underwear in your bag all the time, never know when you might need it after an unplanned sleepover…
Get a heating pad. Heat makes you feel cosy but also helps to stimulate blood flow which lessens the pain of period cramps. If you have access to a kettle or microwave, you can relieve your cramps wherever you are with a hot water bottle or a microwavable heat pack. Make your own heat pack by filling a knee sock with rice and tying off the ends.
Cut down on coffee. If you’re tired, it might seem odd to cut down on caffeine, but your body will thank you for it. Caffeine causes the body to retain more water, which results in a bloated feeling, which worsens your cramps. Don’t make things harder on yourself, and drink one less cup of coffee.
Sorry to all the coffee lovers out there, but you can try and substitute coffee with Kombucha tea, or matcha lattes. Also, avoid those Jägerbombs you mad ting.
Plan your period snacks in advance, and avoid salt. Salty food also makes your body hold onto water. Unfortunately, we tend to crave salt when we’re menstruating. Make it easier to resist the temptation to go on a salty snack binge by preparing snacks ahead of time. Fatty nuts like almonds, bananas, oranges, and dark chocolate all make good period snacks that will make you feel better, not worse.
Shift bloodstains with meat tenderizer. Whether your period surprised you, or your pad or tampon failed, bleeding into your underwear or trousers is annoying, and you might think you’ve ruined your clothes with a bloodstain. (We all have those ‘period pants’ don’t we?)
To shift stains like this, sprinkle the stain with meat tenderizer powder (not the tenderizer hammer) and add enough water for a paste to form. Let the paste sit for 20 and 30 minutes, and then rinse with cold water before washing the clothing.
Up your iron levels by eating spinach and kale. It’s easy for your iron levels to drop while you’re on your period. Instead of turning to red meat, which can make you feel sluggish and uncomfortable, get your iron in by eating iron-rich, healthy foods like leafy greens, including spinach and kale.
