8 Apps to Get You Through Lockdown

Lockdown doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your pals. There really is an app for everything, and given the current pandemic, thank fuck for that! Here’s 8 of our favourite Apps which will guarantee you can still enjoy life from home.

1. For your Mind

There are a fair few meditation apps out there right now, which can make it tricky to pick the right one. Our opinion? They’re all pretty great and any meditation is certainly better than none at all!

But, if we had to choose the right app for right now, we’d probably say Headspace. Because, alongside the free 10 part basics course, Headspace has now added a new FREE collection called ‘Weathering the storm’ which has been customised due to the current lockdown. This collection covers topics relative to today’s, current climate, such as: reframing anxiety, navigating change and advice for handling difficult and uncertain times.

Moreover, the app also recently launched ‘Everybody Headspace’ as a new live-streaming feature! Amazingly, now you can join meditations in real-time, which is helping to connect users and build a sense of community worldwide. We’re sure you’ll agree, this is exactly what we need right now.

Whether you’re looking to meditate, manage anxiety and/or stress or nod off to a soothing sleep-cast, this app will guide you on your quest for mindfulness management.

So hun, plug those headphones in, turn the volume up and wind the anxiety down.

2. For your Body

Yes babe, we know you’ve probably been hounded with adverts from various different workout apps recently. Due to lockdown, restrictions have been put in place and our gyms being temporarily closed. And, yes at the core of it, this is essentially another workout app. But… there are a few additional features in this app that we love and we think you’ll love too.

Alo Moves is first and foremost a online Yoga class platform, but, unlike most other apps, it hosts a whole array of various different classes. Including: HIIT, bodyweight workouts, toning sessions, pilates, barre, balancing and inversion classes and even breathing and meditation exercises.

Additionally, if you like a bit of a challenge or you’re looking to learn something new, how about taking one of the following courses: ‘School of Arm Balance’, ‘Destination Handstand’, ‘Next level Inversions’, ‘Discover your Splits’ or ‘The Balancing Act’. That’s certainly one way to impress your mates, or that girl you met on Passion Fruit Dating App, once lockdown restrictions are finally lifted ;).

Also, they’re offering a 6 week free trial (initially 2 week, but offered a further month once time completed). So, there’s plenty of time for you to try before you buy.

3. For your Brain

How about keeping that noggin’ of yours stimulated? We recommend learning a foreign language with Duolingo. Doesn’t look like you’re going to be able to jet off on any hols anytime soon does it? Sorry Chick. But… at least now you’ve got some time to scrub up on your desired destinations lingo!

The lessons are broken up into short manageable chunks. Meaning you can easily squeeze a quick lesson in while waiting for the kettle to boil. Or have an extended session while you’re out on your (once daily) stroll.

All the Features of Duolingo are completely free, as long as you don’t mind a few adverts! Which means there’s an abundance of learning content to keep you going.

If you’ve tried Duolingo already and you’re not a fan of the lesson structure, there are plenty of other apps out there to help you learn a language. After all, everyone learns in different ways :).

4. For your Followers

I don’t think we can do an article on apps without mentioning the infamous TikTok. For those who are behind the times (as were we a month ago!), TikTok is a social media app, specifically for uploading and watching video clips, synced with music.

From meme culture, viral challenges and influencer collaboration to self-care and mental health awareness, TikTok content really does seem to cover it all.

We’re constantly being called out or shamed for spending too much time watching dumb shit on our phones. But chick, in reality sometimes dumb shit is just what we need to get us through difficult times.

TikTok has certainly taken us by surprise. Proving itself to be a place to feel connected with others, finding common ground on entertaining content. And in turn, temporarily distract us from the underlying uncertainty surrounding us.

5. For your Gut

Don’t know about you, but, frankly we’ve really been struggling to resist the urge to eat comfort food, all day everyday right now. We’ve all experienced the bare food aisles in the supermarkets recently, making it difficult to find the motivation to cook proper meals. Couple the lack of food on offer with the inability to see your pals or your loved ones, is there any wonder we’re all opting for that frozen pizza?

Perhaps you’ve got a little more time on your hands and you’re looking to become a culinary master. If so, Wicked! Now all you need is a neat app to help you organise all your recipes.

That’s where Yummly comes in, your very own personalised recipe recommender and meal planner. It’s pretty much Pinterest for food.

You can personalise your Yummly app with the following:

  • Dietary and allergy requirements
  • Manage your pantry virtually and keep up to date with what you’re running low on and add them to your shopping list
  • Add things from your selected recipes straight to your shopping list
  • Automatically sorts your shopping list into food groups
  • Cooking methods are broken up into simple to follow steps (With pictures!)
  • Save recipes under ‘Yum’ and ‘Yuck’ so you can easily revisit the recipes you loved and steer clear of the ones you didn’t!

6. For your Loved ones

By now, you’ve probably tried all the diffident video chat apps that the internet has to offer. Zoom, Hangouts and Houseparty being the front-runners. They all have their pro’s and con’s depending on what you’re using them for.

But our favourite all-rounder would have to be Zoom. Due to Coronavirus they have removed the 40-minute time limit on group video chats. Meaning that you can chat away for hours with up to 100 friends. And, you can even customise your backdrop! What’s not to love?

Looking for some ideas on how to spice up your Zoom time? Here are a few of our tried and tested ideas:

7. For the Child in You

Mario Kart Tour is available for both iOS and Android. Which means that you don’t have to have a games console to join in with some classic gaming antics.

Now that the app is inclusive of the games multiplayer feature (up to 7 players) you can stay connected with your friends and family while playing, wherever in the world they may be.

What’s more, the race courses are inspired by different cities around the world. Therefore, even in lockdown, you can visit your favourite cities through the virtual world of Mario Kart.

We’ll be the first to admit that it isn’t the same playing the game on your phone as opposed to console in hand, but… It’s still Mario Kart. And, more importantly, it’s accessible to anyone with a phone. So you can even try getting your parents involved for a race!

8. For your much needed R&R

Has reading all the above made you feel exhausted already? Don’t worry hun, we get it. Sometimes it’s all just a bit too much.

Just because we’re in the middle of a pandemic does that mean you have to suddenly learn how to juggle one handed, while cooking with the other hand, and balance on one leg, while reciting a poem in Russian? No, it certainly does not!

Want to bake a cake? Good for you! Want to run 5k? Good for you! Want to stay in bed and binge watch TV all day? Fucking Good for you! It’s not easy processing what’s happening right now and it can be difficult to escape from it all.

Which is why we can’t think of a more warming way to get through this period than downloading Disney+ and having your pic of all the Disney films from your childhood!
