The Best Lesbian Bars and Events in Chicago

Here’s where a very 90s reference comes in (and what is probably not very P.C movie) … because whenever I think of Chicago, I always think of Ace Ventura Pet Detective. IFKYK. But moving on from those 90s references, when you think of Chicago you should know that it is very relevant! Chicago’s LGBTQ+ scene is vibey, with plenty of palces for the LGBTQ+ people to hang out. There’s loads of options depending on your mood – cocktail bars, a night of dancing, or just looking to meet new people, Chicago’s got you covered. If that sounds good to you, read on because we have found some of the best lesbian bars and events in the city.

Lesbian Bars in Chicago

Nobody’s Darling

Located in the heart of Andersonville, Nobody’s Darling is a cocktail bar that has quickly become a cornerstone of Chicago’s lesbian scene. This Black-women-owned, James Beard-nominated bar (don’t know what that is….Well, they are considered one of the highest honors in the US culinary industry, and are often called the “Oscars” of the food world, so kind of a big deal)

The vibe is cool and modern, perfect for hanging out with friends or having a fun night. But it’s not just about the style—this place is all about community, hosting events that bring all kinds of people together.

Dorothy

Dorothy in West Town is all about cool 70s retro vibes with a modern twist. Named after the classic phrase “friend of Dorothy,” it’s a nod to LGBTQ+ history wrapped in a stylish, laid-back cocktail lounge. The drinks menu is packed with creative cocktails, (we recommend the Dorothy Martini) which match the chill yet energetic vibe of the place. They even spice things up with fun events like open mic nights and silent book clubs, giving it that perfect blend of nostalgia and fresh energy. If you’re looking for a spot that’s as unique as it is welcoming, Dorothy’s the place to be.

The Closet

If you’re looking for something more low key, The Closet in Lakeview has been a part of Chicago’s LGBTQ+ nightlife since 1978. It’s a cozy little bar with a super friendly vibe, and there’s always something fun going on—think karaoke nights, darts, and late-night dance parties. It’s the perfect place to kick back with friends or meet some new ones without any fuss. The fact that it’s been around for decades says a lot about how much people love it and how it’s stayed a part of Chicago’s lesbian community.

Whiskey Girl Tavern

Situated in Edgewater, Whiskey Girl Tavern is a lesbian owned sports bar that concentrates on showcasing women’s sports. It is like the cool aunt of bars—warm, welcoming, and always ready to pour you a drink while giving off zero judgment vibes. The staff? Absolute legends who make you feel like a regular even if it’s your first time. Locals love it because it’s laid-back, unpretentious, and just the right mix of “let’s chill” and “let’s party.” Whether you’re bonding over beers or sharing your life story with a stranger who will probably become your new best friend (we’ve all been there on a night out) this place just gets it.

Lesbian Events and Parties

Sapphic Saturday at Sidetrack

Held monthly at the iconic Sidetrack in Boystown, Sapphic Saturdays is basically the lesbian Super Bowl, but with more dancing and fewer ad (or commercials if you aren’t British) breaks. On the last Saturday of every month, queer women and their allies take over for a night of music that slaps, dancing that might double as cardio, and performances so good they’ll have you yelling, “Take my money!” It’s the perfect place to let your hair down, make some questionable dance moves, and accidentally bump into your future wife? while waiting in line for a drink.

Lez Get Together

As the name suggests, Lez Get Together creates booze free events and get togethers. They throw everything from chill hangouts to parties. It’s the perfect spot to meet new friends, potential soulmates, or just someone who will share fries with you at 1 a.m. Inclusivity, fun, and zero awkward Tinder swiping required (if that’s what you’re there for).

Fruit Salad

Fruit Salad is a monthly queer open mic held at Dorothy on the first Wednesday of every month. A safe place for all, yep that’s why they named it fruit salad, you’re guaranteed a crowd just as colourful. It’s the kind of place where you’ll meet someone new, forget their name, and end up in their Insta stories anyway. Whether you’re there to party, people-watch, or just soak in the creativity, Fruit Salad is the perfect recipe for a good time—no actual fruit required.

Lust for Life

Lust for Life is like the Chappell Roan of Chicago lesbian events—bold, unforgettable, and a little bit extra in the best way possible. It is a bi-monthly burlesque event show at…you guessed it, Dorothy. This event series throws rock’n’roll parties that make you want to go all out. Lust for Life keeps the vibe fresh and fun… Trust us—you’ll leave already planning your outfit for the next one.

Annual Events

BackLot Bash

BackLot Bash is the Midwest’s ultimate lesbian Pride fest, it is the annual outdoor festival during Pride weekend in Andersonville. Spanning multiple days, it’s the crown jewel of Chicago’s Pride Month (it’s been around for 20+ years). Drawing thousands of women (those women included Katie Moenig, Leisha Hailey and Ruby Rose) ready to celebrate who they are and who they love. Basically, if you’re not at BackLot Bash, what are you even doing with your Pride Month?

Chicago Pride Fest and Parade

Chicago Pride Fest and the iconic Pride Parade are the ultimate celebrations of all things LGBTQ+, with lesbian groups and organizations bringing their A-game every year. From dazzling themed floats to entertainment that’s as inclusive as it is fabulous, these events are a nonstop party of unity and visibility. Whether you’re marching with the crowd or soaking up the energy from the sidelines, it’s a colorful, joyful reminder of just how strong and vibrant Chicago’s queer community really is.

Chicago’s lesbian scene is where good times and great energy come together. Whether you’re sipping a Dorothy Martini, belting out karaoke classics at The Closet, or turning the dance floor into your personal runway at Sapphic Saturday, this city knows how to deliver. With events like Fruit Salad and BackLot Bash, there’s always something happening to keep things fresh and fun. So, grab a drink, hit the dance floor, and see for yourself why Chicago’s queer scene is as bold and dynamic as the city itself. You’ll leave with good memories—and maybe a new favorite bar.
