How to be the Best Ally this Lesbian Visibility Day

Firstly, happy Lesbian Visibility Day! Although where it started exactly is a little unclear, the official Lesbian Visibility Day has been around since 2008. Every year, Lesbian Visibility Day is celebrated on the 26th April, and this year Lesbian Visibility Week (we get a whole week!) lasts from 25th April to 1st May. It’s basically a groovy week to celebrate and acknowledge how iconic lesbians are (because we really are). So to celebrate, we thought we’d give a run down on how to be the best ally this Lesbian Visibility Day and beyond. Whether you’re straight, gay, bi, or any identity in the LGBTQ+ community, here’s some ways you can support your iconic lesbian friends because let’s face it, they deserve it.

Tell your lesbian friends they rock

This is a rule – because we really do rock.

Why not consume some iconic lesbian content?

You really thought we wouldn’t mention some iconic lesbian content for you to help celebrate? Music, books, films, we’ve got you covered. And guess what? This content is so good we reckon you should enjoy it all year round forever. We’d recommend starting with our Spotify – have a Lesbian Visibility Day dance party, we dare you.

Listen up

Listen to what your queer friends are saying! If you’re not queer, although you can be super duper supportive, you won’t ever fully understand what it’s like to be queer. That means you should listen to the experiences of your queer friends and be an open and accepting icon.

Pass the mic

Similar to above, show your queer friends you’ve got their back when you support them. Speak up on issues, call out that homophobia but remember not to talk over your queer friends. Instead, pass the metaphorical sparkly pink microphone so their voices can be heard. They’ll really thank you for that.

Remember that being an ally doesn’t stop after Lesbian Visibility Day

We’ve all seen the trends- big company’s donning a rainbow logo in June for Pride, then July rolls around and BAM no more gays.  In the same way, being an ally and supporting your LGBTQ+ besties is something that needs to happen all year round.

We hope you have a fabulous Lesbian Visibility Day- let us know in the comments or on our socials how you’re celebrating!

Much love, Team Nonchalant x
